Prague Signal – Festival of Lights 2022
Each October, the city of Prague transforms into a visual wonderland as the historical centre of the town turns into a space ready for new ideas with dynamic performances of light and sound.
The city turns into a live stage featuring live video mapping on the old town buildings for four days in October. Over the years, the event has expanded to become a renowned digital art festival across many new venues and locations.
The 2021 Program
- This year’s Prague Signal: Festival of Lights features a total of 4 routes, 15 installations in public spaces and six exhibits using augmented reality, known as Signal AR. Experience works by Milena Dopitová, Jiří Černický and the design duo Vrtiška & Žák.
The AR Route
- Discover the first-ever AR route in Prague’s Karlín district. Download the festival app, hit the streets and uncover unique artworks in augmented reality through your own smartphone. Nothing else is needed. There is no entry fee, no barriers; it’s simply a virtual collection of paintings in public space; it is Signal Festival in broad daylight. The AR festival will run from 8 am to 7 pm and will be open from the end of September, and will run for at least a year.
Other Routes & Highlights
- As well as the AR route in Karlín, you can also explore installations in the Old Town and Holešovice. Experience a monumental 3D projection by the Spanish studio Onionlab, as it transforms the familiar environment of the Industrial Palace at the Prague Exhibition Grounds into a unique experience. The popular video mapping of the Church of Sts. Cyril and Methodius on Karlín Square also return.
- Jiří Černický, a visual artist, creator of experimental and intermedia projects and head of the Painting Studio at the Prague UMPRUM, will prepare a mysterious and impressive projection of aquatic animals hidden in the depths of the ocean. Experience his installation, Archaic Topicalities in the Karlín Barracks.
The festival pass can be purchased until October 3rd for 200 CZK, from October 4th to October 13th for 250 CZK, and on the spot for 300 CZK. Stay close to the heart of all the main exhibits in Prague Old Town.
Over the years, the festival has grown, and it is no longer located in just one area. The exhibits are spread out over more than 12km, so plan your visit in advance and consider exploring the different venues over two or three days to experience everything. Grab a hot drink of Mead, Grog, Cider, Punch or Mulled wine to keep you warm. Delicious.
We have found that the best place to stay is in the old town of Prague as this makes a good base, the gay bars and clubs a little spread out, but most are within walking distance from the old town, and the others just a short taxi ride away,
Here are the hotels we recommend that have good reviews and keep you close to all the action
Gay Map of Prague
There is no main gay village or district in Prague. Instead the bars are spread out over town areas, mainly in the city centre and in the Vinohrady district.
