Glasgow Christmas Markets 2026 – Winter Wonderland and Festive Events

Glasgow’s Christmas season combines food stalls at St Enoch Square, outdoor skating at Glasgow Green and a new Christmas village in George Square. Add Buchanan Street shopping and a night in Merchant City, and you have the makings of a very sociable winter weekend.

St Enoch Square Christmas Market

• Next Edition: Friday 6th November – Sunday 27th December 2026 – Best for: Market food and a break from Christmas shopping.
• At the foot of Buchanan Street, St Enoch Square is the easiest market to work into a shopping afternoon. Browse personalised decorations and festive gifts, then follow the smell of bratwurst from the Swing Grill.
• Food stalls serve churros, Dutch pancakes and loaded doughnuts. The covered festive bar has free entertainment, making this a useful meeting point if your group’s enthusiasm for shopping varies.
• Its particular draw is the location: shops, market stalls and St Enoch Subway station together in one compact stop. The solar-powered observation wheel adds a view above the shopping streets.
• Stay at Motel One Glasgow on Oswald Street, beside Central Station and within walking distance of the square. It suits a weekend spent out exploring, with a comfortable lounge for a drink on your return.

Glasgow Green Winter Wonderland

• Next Edition: Friday 20th November 2026 – Sunday 3rd January 2027 – Best for: Outdoor skating and a full evening of attractions.
• Glasgow Green is the larger Winter Wonderland site, with an open-air ice rink, observation wheel, fairground rides and the Very Merry Circus in the Festive Big Top.
• The rink is the reason to make the trip here. Book a session, then meet your friends at the rinkside bar; nobody needs to skate to join you for a drink.
• The main festive bar seats 800 and offers free entertainment. Food vendors and attractions give you enough to build an evening around, particularly if you fancy a break from shopping.
• Enter through the McLennan Arch at the western end of the park. This puts you on the side closest to Merchant City for dinner and drinks afterwards.
• Stay at The Social Hub Glasgow on Candleriggs. Its Merchant City location works particularly well for combining Glasgow Green with the gay bars around Virginia Street and Wilson Street.

George Square – Good Times Christmas Village

• Next Edition: Thursday 19th November 2026 – to End December.
• George Square returns to the Christmas programme following its redevelopment, with the new Good Times Christmas Village bringing food, drinks and festive lighting to the square.
• The setting is its distinction: the City Chambers backdrop and the square’s central location make it a natural starting point before heading towards Buchanan Street.
• Keep this stop flexible until the complete programme is published.
• Stay at Native Glasgow on St Vincent Place, just off the square. Apartments with kitchen facilities make it a practical choice for a longer stay, with Merchant City close enough for evenings out.

Christmas Lights and Shopping

Give yourself time between the Christmas venues. Buchanan Street connects the shopping district with St Enoch Square, and Princes Square makes a useful indoor stop along the way.

• Buchanan Street: Follow the pedestrianised shopping street between George Square and St Enoch, leaving time to browse rather than treating it simply as the walk between markets.
• Argyll Arcade: A worthwhile indoor detour for jewellery and watches, particularly if your Christmas present requires more consideration than another scented candle.
• Merchant City: Save this part of town for later, when shopping gives way to dinner and the gay bars.

Christmas Shows and Entertainment

• Glasgow’s theatre and music venues offer plenty of alternatives to the outdoor markets, particularly on colder evenings.
• King’s Theatre Glasgow – One of the city’s principal pantomime venues, with a traditional festive production each Christmas.

• For a more traditional Glasgow pub experience, The Waterloo on Argyle Street is another longstanding gay venue, particularly convenient for visitors staying near Central Station.

Getting Around Glasgow at Christmas

Glasgow’s central Christmas attractions are reasonably easy to explore without a car.

• St Enoch Square – Beside St Enoch Subway station, with Glasgow Central and Queen Street stations nearby.
• George Square – A short walk from Queen Street station and Buchanan Street.
• Glasgow Green – Approximately 15-20 minutes on foot from Merchant City, depending on the entrance.
• Subway – Convenient for exploring the West End, although it does not serve Glasgow Green directly.
• Trains – Central Station is the principal arrival point for services from England and southwest Scotland, while Queen Street serves Edinburgh and many other Scottish destinations.
• December weekends can be particularly busy, so reserve restaurants and ticketed attractions in advance.
