What to Expect

  • Fiestas Patrias is one of the most entertaining times of the year to visit Santiago.
  • The city fills with Chilean flags, music and celebrations as friends and families gather for several days of eating, drinking and dancing.
  • At the centre of the festivities are the fondas and ramadas – temporary celebrations combining live music, traditional food, bars, dancing and games.
  • Some are huge outdoor festivals attracting thousands of people. Others are smaller neighbourhood celebrations.
  • Cueca, Chile’s national dance, is everywhere, joined by cumbia, live bands and contemporary Chilean music as the celebrations continue into the night.
  • September marks the beginning of spring in Santiago, with warmer afternoons making the city’s outdoor fondas particularly popular.

The Fondas

  • Visiting at least one fonda should be part of any Fiestas Patrias weekend in Santiago.
  • Parque O’Higgins traditionally hosts one of the city’s biggest celebrations, combining live concerts, food stalls, bars, dancing and traditional entertainment close to central Santiago.
  • Parque Inés de Suárez in Providencia has hosted Fonda Lady Inés, another large celebration featuring Chilean artists, food and entertainment.
  • Parque Padre Hurtado hosts Semana de la Chilenidad, one of the Santiago region’s largest traditional celebrations with music, equestrian displays, Chilean food and cultural events.

What to Eat & Drink

  • Come hungry. Food and drink are a major part of the Fiestas Patrias experience.
  • Empanadas de pino are one of the classics, traditionally filled with seasoned beef, onion, egg and olives.
  • Anticuchos – skewers of grilled meat – cook over barbecues throughout the fondas, joined by choripán, grilled meats and other Chilean favourites.
  • For something sweet, look for alfajores and traditional Chilean pastries.
  • The classic Fiestas Patrias drink is the terremoto, traditionally made with pipeño wine and pineapple ice cream. It tastes deceptively easy to drink, so pace yourself.
  • Chicha and Chilean wine are equally popular, with pisco appearing in everything from piscolas to pisco sours.

La Gay Fonda

  • La Gay Fonda has become one of Santiago’s standout LGBTQ+ celebrations during Fiestas Patrias, combining Chilean traditions with drag, pop, electronic music and a large queer crowd.
  • The event has grown considerably in recent editions. The 2026 celebration moved to Bosque Luz in Huechuraba and expanded into a large-scale festival.
  • The event featured three distinct music areas – an outdoor main stage, an indoor dance floor and a dedicated electronic music area.
  • Performers included Princesa Alba, Las Wekanarias, Las Gansas and a large cast of Chilean drag artists, joined by DJs and live acts.
  • Away from the stages, expect a playful take on the traditional fonda with Drag Bingo, games, a mechanical bull and plenty of Chilean food and drinks.
  • Empanadas, anticuchos and terremotos sit alongside DJs, drag and late-night dancing.
  • The 2027 venue, artists and ticket information are awaiting announcement.
  • Follow La Gay Fonda on Instagram for the latest announcements and ticket release.
  • If the event returns to Bosque Luz, allow extra travel time. Huechuraba is north of central Santiago and outside the main Bellavista nightlife district.

Military Parade

  • Sunday 19th September 2027 – The Gran Parada Militar takes place every September 19th at Parque O’Higgins as part of Día de las Glorias del Ejército.
  • The large ceremonial parade brings together the Chilean Army and other branches of the country’s armed and security services.
  • Visit the Chilean Army official website for information about the annual ceremony.
  • The parade takes place on the main ellipse at Parque O’Higgins and traditionally attracts large crowds.
  • Public viewing areas normally open during the morning and admission is free.
  • Parque O’Higgins is south of central Santiago and has its own station on Metro de Santiago, served by Line 2.
  • Road closures operate around the park during the event, so Metro is the easiest option.
  • The ceremony offers a very different experience from the fondas and late-night parties taking place across Santiago and remains one of the major traditions of Fiestas Patrias.

Gay Santiago

  • Bellavista is the main neighbourhood to know for gay nightlife in Santiago.
  • The scene is concentrated around Bombero Núñez, Antonia López de Bello, Santa Filomena and nearby streets, north of the Mapocho River.
  • The compact layout makes Bellavista particularly convenient for visitors. Start with dinner, move on to a couple of bars and then head to one of the neighbourhood’s clubs later in the night.
  • Santiago goes out late. Drinks around 10 pm or 11 pm followed by clubs after midnight is a much better plan than starting too early.
  • Fiestas Patrias can affect normal opening hours, so check individual venue social media before heading out.

Gay Bars & Clubs

  • Contramano Restopub – Bombero Núñez 388. Popular LGBTQ+ bar with drinks, food, drag and cabaret-style entertainment. A good starting point before moving on to the clubs.
  • Bar 105 Fetish – Bombero Núñez 105. Established gay fetish bar attracting a predominantly male crowd with a cruisier late-night atmosphere.
  • Hangar Bellavista – Santa Filomena 10. Gay dance club with Latin pop, reggaeton, DJs, go-go dancers and regular theme parties.
  • Club Soda – Antonia López de Bello 125. Late-night Bellavista club with dancing, Latin sounds and a mixed LGBTQ+ crowd.
  • Illuminati – Antonia López de Bello 133. Popular gay club with pop, Latin music, dancers and a young local crowd.
  • Fausto Discotheque – Avenida Santa María 832. One of Santiago’s longest-running gay clubs, known for DJs, drag, theme parties and several bar and dance areas.
  • Blondie – Avenida Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins 2879. Long-running alternative club with several rooms and regular pop, indie and themed parties attracting a large LGBTQ+ following.

Getting Around

  • Metro de Santiago is the easiest way to travel between central neighbourhoods and many of the major Fiestas Patrias events during the day.
  • Bellavista is served by Baquedano Metro station, with the main nightlife area across the river around a 10-minute walk away.
  • Parque O’Higgins has its own Metro station on Line 2.
  • Parque Inés de Suárez is served by Inés de Suárez station on Line 6.
  • Taxis and rideshare apps are useful late at night, particularly when returning from clubs or fondas outside central Santiago.
  • Expect heavier traffic and increased demand during September 18th and 19th.

Practical Tips

  • September 18th and 19th are mandatory public holidays in Chile, so many shops and supermarkets close.
  • Restaurants, pubs, clubs, entertainment venues and hotels operate under different rules and many remain open.
  • Do any shopping you need before the main holidays begin.
  • Book popular restaurants ahead and buy tickets for the major fondas once the programmes are released.
  • Spring weather can vary between warm afternoons and much cooler evenings, so bring a light jacket if you’re spending several hours at an outdoor fonda.
  • Carry some Chilean pesos for smaller food stalls and vendors, though card payments are widely accepted across Santiago.

Where to Stay

  • Stay around Bellavista or neighbouring Lastarria. Bellavista puts you close to Santiago’s gay nightlife, while Lastarria offers boutique hotels, restaurants and a stylish base just across the river.
  • The Singular Santiago – An upscale Lastarria hotel with a rooftop pool, spa and acclaimed restaurant. Its location works particularly well for combining sightseeing, Fiestas Patrias events and nights out in nearby Bellavista.
  • Hotel Magnolia Santiago – Design-focused boutique hotel inside a restored historic building with contemporary rooms and a rooftop terrace. A strong choice for exploring central Santiago on foot.
  • Hotel Cumbres Lastarria – Contemporary hotel with a rooftop pool in the middle of Lastarria’s restaurant district. Bellavista and the bars around Bombero Núñez are within easy reach.
  • Hotel Boutique Castillo Rojo – Characterful boutique property in Bellavista close to Patio Bellavista and the neighbourhood’s nightlife. Pick this one if being close to the gay bars is your priority.

Fiestas Patrias Tips

  • Visit at least one major fonda.
  • Make Saturday 18th your main celebration day.
  • Check La Gay Fonda once the 2027 programme is released.
  • Try an empanada de pino and a terremoto.
  • Stay around Bellavista or Lastarria for nightlife.
  • Expect Santiago’s clubs to get busy after midnight.
  • Buy major fonda tickets before the weekend.
  • Plan around widespread shop closures on September 18th and 19th.
  • Keep Sunday morning free if you want to see the Gran Parada Militar.
