The Ultimate Guide to Gay & LGBTQ+ Parties in Rio de Janeiro

Rio Carnival is one of the biggest party weeks on the planet. For LGBTQ+ travelers, it delivers a unique mix of bloco street energy, waterfront day parties, warehouse club nights, boat cruises, and late-night circuit-style events.

From Centro’s historic streets to Copacabana’s beachfront mega clubs and Barra’s large-scale venues, Rio becomes a non-stop party city. Expect packed daytime block parties, sunset boat cruises, and after-dark club sessions running until sunrise.

This guide brings together the key LGBTQ+ and gay-popular parties, venues, and planning tips to help you build the perfect Carnival schedule.

Survival Guide

Here are our insider tips for a successful Rio Carnival Party Marathon.

  • Ipanema is the top pick for gay travelers. Posto 8-9 beach is the main gay meeting point, with easy metro access and lots of bars, cafes, and late-night food.
  • Copacabana and Leme are cheaper than Ipanema and still work well, with fast Uber and metro access.
  • Flamengo, Gloria, and Botafogo are strong mid-price bases for blocos in Centro and Aterro do Flamengo.
  • Santa Teresa looks great on Instagram but gets very crowded, steep, and hard to move around during blocos.
  • Centro + Lapa host a huge number of LGBTQ-friendly blocos and late-night parties.
  • Blocos usually start between 12pm-4pm, with peak crowds mid-afternoon. Do blocos until 3pm-5pm. Head back to hotel to rest, shower, change. Go out again for club nights from 10pm onward. Trying to do full-day blocos + full-night clubbing without breaks leads to burnout fast.
  • The real Carnival energy is on the streets. Costumes, glitter, minimal outfits are normal. Expect to get sweaty, soaked, and crowded – that’s part of it.
  • Don’t walk around with your phone in your hand. Phone snatching is common. Use a money belt or zipped pouch for cards, ID, and cash. Avoid flashy jewelry, watches, or designer bags. Metro is good for daytime. At night, Uber is preferred.
  • Hydrate constantly. Heat and humidity drain energy fast. Eat proper meals. Many parties run long with limited food.
