Exploring Cologne’s Christmas Markets

Cathedral Christmas Market

• The Cathedral Market supplies Cologne’s most dramatic Christmas backdrop.
• Beneath the canopy of lights, over 120 stalls sell crafts, gifts and seasonal food, with free performances on the central stage.
• This is the market to prioritise on your first visit, particularly if you want the classic Cologne Christmas photograph.
• Arrive before dusk to browse the stalls and watch traditional crafts being made, then stay as the lights come on.
• From here, continue into the Old Town for Alter Markt and Heumarkt.

Heinzels Wintermärchen – Alter Markt & Heumarkt

• Cologne’s Old Town market takes its inspiration from the Heinzelmännchen, the helpful household spirits of local folklore.
• The two neighbouring squares offer different reasons to visit: Alter Markt has traditional crafts and makers at work; Heumarkt has the outdoor ice rink winding around the equestrian statue.
• Browse the craft lanes before heading to the ice, or make Heumarkt your evening stop for food and skating.
• It is the useful one to remember for a trip after Christmas, when most of Cologne’s other markets have closed. Skating requires a separate ticket.

Angels’ Christmas Market – Neumarkt

• A canopy of illuminated stars gives Angels’ Market its signature look.

• Come hungry for potato pancakes, flame-grilled salmon or pasta served from a cheese wheel.
• This is a good market for an unhurried evening with your partner.
• Drop the shopping bags first, then return after dark for food and drinks beneath the lights. Wednesday’s after-work gathering starts at 6pm at Wolke.

Nikolausdorf – Rudolfplatz

• Illuminated village-style huts gather beneath the medieval Hahnentorburg, giving Nikolausdorf a setting all its own.
• Local performers bring a distinctly Kölsch flavour to the evening programme, with the city gate framing the scene.
• This is our choice for a final market stop before the gay bars.
• Arrive for the local stage programme from 6pm, have a Glühwein, then continue to Schaafenstraße. It fits neatly after HEAVENUE on your western market route.

Harbour Christmas Market

• The Rhine setting is the reason to come here. Outside the Chocolate Museum, the Harbour Market pairs riverside views with a 48-metre Ferris wheel.
• For 2026, around 70 wooden huts replace the former pagoda tents, accompanied by a new lighting scheme.
• Combine it with the Chocolate Museum for a useful indoor-and-outdoor afternoon: visit the exhibition first, then head outside for the lights and a ride above the river.
• Its January closing date makes it a good option for a New Year break, too.

• Stadtgarten is our choice for gifts with individuality. Beneath the park’s mature trees, over 60 exhibitors change weekly, bringing crafts, jewellery, accessories and design.
• The changing selection gives you a reason to return if you are spending longer in Cologne.
• The house Glühwein comes from an organic winery in the Nahe region, with red and white versions available.
• Start your western market outing here, leave time to browse, then continue to HEAVENUE at Friesenplatz.
