Porto Tips
Porto is hilly and compact, with the Douro River dividing the city into two main areas:
- Porto (the historical centre) and Vila Nova de Gaia (home to the port wine cellars).
- The best way to explore the historic centre is on foot. The landmark trams are a fun way to see the sights but can be crowded.
- For that Instagram moment, make sure you Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge and take in the views of the city from this iconic bridge.
- And try the famous local dishes, including Francesinha; the hearty toasted sandwich is a Porto speciality.
- Stay in Ribeira; the historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with charming narrow streets and colourful houses.
- It’s the best area for first-time visitors, with easy access to major attractions, restaurants and shops.
- Experience Porto’s Charm with a 3-hour guided walking tour and enjoy the city’s amazing sights.
