The Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market is the largest authentic German Market outside of Germany and Austria
Birmingham brings German Christmas traditions into the city centre, with bratwurst, glühwein and wooden gift stalls stretching from New Street to Victoria Square. Nearby Cathedral Square adds independent traders, and Centenary Square supplies the skating and skyline views.
Make a weekend of it: shop during the afternoon, return to the market for food and music after dark, then head towards the Gay Village for drinks.
- Stay at The Grand Hotel Birmingham, a restored Victorian landmark on Church Street, just a short walk from Victoria Square, with elegant rooms, a cocktail bar and restaurant.
The Christmas Market

- Victoria Square is the main meeting point, with German beer and glühwein bars, a traditional carousel and a stage hosting live music.

The Frankfurt Christmas Market
The Frankfurt Christmas Market is the main reason to visit. Its connection with Birmingham’s German partner city gives it a clear identity: traditional decorations, German food, beer and a live music programme around Victoria Square.
- Location: Victoria Square and New Street.
- Admission: Free; food, drinks and gifts purchased separately.
- Hours: Monday to Thursday 11:00-21:00; Friday 11:00-21:30; Saturday 10:00-21:30; Sunday 10:00-21:00.
- Remembrance Sunday, 8th November: Opens at 13:00.
New Street is the browsing stretch. Work your way through wooden decorations, glass baubles, star lights and gift stalls before reaching Victoria Square, where food and drink turn the visit into a social evening.
- Eat your way around the stalls: bratwurst, pretzels and roasted almonds are among the established favourites.
- Choose glühwein for something warming, wheat beer for a longer stop, or hot chocolate between shopping rounds.
- Keep Victoria Square for the part of the visit when you are ready to stop, eat and listen to the music.
- Stay at Hotel du Vin Birmingham, on Church Street, a short walk from the market. The converted Victorian eye hospital has a French-style bistro and bar, giving you a comfortable dinner option after an afternoon outdoors.
Live Music in Victoria Square
- The stage gives the Frankfurt market a reason to linger after shopping. Musicians from Birmingham and Germany perform during the season, with weekday lunchtime and evening sessions and a broader weekend programme.
- Use the official entertainment schedule to choose your visit if music is part of the appeal. The market includes German house-band performances, local singers, community groups and a Monday evening new-talent showcase.
Christmas in Cathedral Square
Christmas in Cathedral Square is the stop for independent gifts. The cathedral grounds host a programme featuring over 60 independent businesses, with crafts, handmade decorations, artisan food and seasonal drinks.
- Location: Cathedral Square, around Birmingham Cathedral.
- Hours: Monday to Wednesday 11:00-21:00; Thursday to Saturday 11:00-21:30; Sunday 12:00-21:00.
- Christmas Eve: Closes at 19:00.
- Browse the gift stalls before choosing somewhere to eat.
- The helter-skelter and small Ferris wheel add fairground detail around the cathedral setting.
- Visit the charity chalet to discover the organisations taking part during your stay.
- Check Birmingham Cathedral for seasonal services and events that could fit around your visit.
- Stay at No.8 Waterloo Street, opposite the cathedral area. Its serviced apartments are our recommendation for this market, especially for a longer stay when kitchen facilities and space to unpack your purchases are required.
Ice Skating and the Big Wheel
Centenary Square changes the pace from shopping to activities. Continue here from Victoria Square when you want to stretch the afternoon into an evening.
Ice Skate Birmingham runs from Thursday 5th November 2026 to Sunday 3rd January 2027, closing on Christmas Day.
- Skating sessions last 45 minutes, with skate hire included.
- Book a session in advance and arrive 30 minutes before your slot.
- The Big Wheel offers an elevated view of the city centre and its seasonal lights.
- Check the booking calendar for your chosen time; the operator’s information page contains differing general opening-hour statements.
- Choose AC Hotel by Marriott Birmingham if you would like a canal-side base at the Mailbox, with the Christmas attractions and evening restaurants accessible on foot.

- Allow approximately two hours and ten minutes, including the interval.
- Book your performance first, then plan dinner and market shopping around it.

Birmingham’s Gay Village at Christmas
The Gay Village centres on Hurst Street, Bromsgrove Street and Kent Street, south of the main shopping streets. Allow roughly 15 minutes to walk from Victoria Square, depending on your destination.
Keep it for the evening finish: dinner, a quieter first drink, then a party bar or club according to your plans.
- Equator Bar – 123 Hurst Street. A compact gay social bar with a relaxed daytime feel and a more upbeat weekend atmosphere. A useful first stop; its regular schedule currently excludes Mondays.
- Missing Bar – 48 Bromsgrove Street. Choose it for DJs, drag and karaoke. The downstairs bar opens from midday, with Studio 48 upstairs hosting entertainment and events.
- The Fox – 17 Lower Essex Street. A pub-style stop with a separate pool room, rear garden and Friday karaoke.
- The Nightingale Club – 18 Kent Street. The larger club option for continuing the night. Check its current event listings before choosing your evening.
