17th Street – Washington DC’s Gay Neighbourhood
Dupont Circle has been central to Washington’s LGBTQ+ history for decades. The restaurants and bars along 17th Street are part of the High Heel Race tradition, with crowds gathering before and after the event.
- JR’s Bar & Grill – A longstanding gay bar with a street-facing patio, video screens, show tunes and a particularly busy crowd during the race.
- Annie’s Paramount Steakhouse – A Washington gay institution since the 1940s, with a classic American dining room, steaks, burgers and a long history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
- Floriana – An Italian restaurant in a converted townhouse, with intimate dining rooms and Dito’s basement bar, a favourite for cocktails before the race.
- Trade – A gay neighbourhood bar on 14th Street NW with strong cocktails, a lively front bar and a back room that gets busier as the evening progresses. Popular with a mixed local crowd and approximately 10 minutes’ walk from the High Heel Race.
Getting There
- Dupont Circle Metro Station on the Red Line is approximately a 5 to 10-minute walk from the event.
- Roads around 17th Street close for the celebrations, so public transport is easier than driving. If arriving by taxi or rideshare, arrange a drop-off outside the street closures.
Where to Stay
Dupont Circle is the most convenient neighbourhood for the race, with the gay bars, restaurants and event route within walking distance.
- Hotel Madera – Generously sized rooms, some with balconies, and a location just off Dupont Circle. Its restaurant and bar are useful for an early dinner before walking to the race.
- Kimpton Banneker Hotel – A polished hotel on 16th Street with comfortable rooms, a French restaurant and a rooftop terrace. Close enough to walk to the celebrations while sitting away from the busiest stretch of 17th Street.
- Hotel Zena – An art-focused hotel celebrating women’s empowerment, with contemporary rooms and a rooftop bar. A good base for combining Dupont nightlife with downtown sightseeing.
- The Darcy Hotel – A well-appointed boutique hotel on Rhode Island Avenue, with comfortable beds, spacious suites and a complimentary evening gin tasting. Around 10 minutes’ walk from the High Heel Race, close to Dupont Circle but away from the busiest stretch of 17th Street.
