Film festival 8-16 June 2019
Shanghai Pride is one of the youngest pride events in Asia and while small by western standards it is one of the fastest growing in the region. It features world class parties and a series of events with a strong poltical message.
Shanghai Pride packs in parties, talent shows, art exhibits, a Pride run, Trivia nights and panel discussions. The highlight of the celebration is the ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival at venues around town, including consulates and the historic Pearl Theater.
The eight-day event will be host to the usual assorted revelry, shirtlessness and tight Lycra short shorts. But amid the festivities, a note of seriousness will underscore what many see as an accomplishment in and of itself. “A week-long string of events has been planned to boost the LGBT’s community position in China and raise awareness around LGBT themes including marriage equality, sexual health and societal acceptance.
Dont miss the Pride Run. As this event is in China, political marches or parades are not given a licence but this alternative fun event is as close as the organisers can get to a march. It is a colourful event through the city.
Here are the hotels we recommend that have good reviews and keep you close to all the action
The gay scene in Shanghai changes quickly, and there is no particular ‘gay district’. A few well-established gay venues can be found in the Old French Concession area – Shanghai’s richest and most vibrant neighborhoods.
The French Concession is west of the historic Old City and Bund areas, and south of the dynamic Jingan neighborhood. Most are along blocks either on or near the neighborhood’s main east-west drag, Huaihai Zhong Lu.
