The Big Gay Day in Brisbane is the biggest LGBT street festival in Queensland and takes place each year during the King’s Birthday Long Weekend. Note, After 25 incredible years of Big Gay Day, the event has moved from May to October.

• The party continues from 9 pm at The Warehouse for the official GAY OUT After Party.

The Venue – The Wickham

• The Wickham is at 308 Wickham Street in Fortitude Valley and has been closely connected with Brisbane’s LGBTQ+ community since the 1970s.
• The historic pub has been extensively redeveloped but retains its large outdoor and social spaces, making it particularly well suited to a multi-arena daytime party.
• Outside major events, The Wickham runs regular DJs, drag, food and late-night entertainment throughout the week.
• Its Fortitude Valley location puts you directly in Brisbane’s principal nightlife district, so there is little reason to leave the area between afternoon drinks and the party.

The Official After Party

• GAY OUT finishes at The Wickham at 9 pm, but the night continues at The Warehouse.
• The official GAY OUT After Party is powered by LAB and runs from 9 pm until late.
• Expect a darker warehouse atmosphere, bigger production and underground sounds compared with the daytime block party.
• Separate tickets are available for the after-party, so check what is included when booking your GAY OUT ticket.

Before GAY OUT

• If you’re making a weekend of it, Fortitude Valley is the easiest place to start.
• The Wickham itself opens well before GAY OUT, so there’s no need to organise an elaborate pre-party.
• For Saturday night, The Beat Megaclub at 677 Ann Street remains one of Brisbane’s best-known LGBTQ+ clubs, with multiple dance floors, DJs and regular drag shows.
• Sportsman Hotel on Leichhardt Street, known locally as Sporties, is another long-running Brisbane gay venue and a good option if you prefer a pub and bar atmosphere.

Make a Weekend of It

• GAY OUT falls on the King’s Birthday long weekend in Queensland, which makes staying in Brisbane for a couple of nights far more appealing than treating it as a quick Sunday visit.
• Base yourself in Fortitude Valley and you’ll have The Wickham, restaurants and late-night venues nearby.
• New Farm is a quieter alternative immediately beside the Valley, with cafés, restaurants and easy access to the river.

Staying around Fortitude Valley makes this weekend particularly easy. You can spend Saturday exploring Brisbane, return to your hotel before the party and walk or take a short ride back after the Sunday celebrations.

• The Alva Hotel Brisbane – Contemporary upscale hotel on Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley. A strong choice if you want a newer hotel within easy reach of The Wickham and the neighbourhood’s restaurants and nightlife.
• Crystalbrook Vincent – Stylish five-star hotel at Howard Smith Wharves with a rooftop pool and riverfront setting. My pick for turning GAY OUT into a more polished Brisbane weekend, with Fortitude Valley close by.
• The Constance Fortitude Valley – Boutique hotel on Constance Street with contemporary rooms and a central Valley location. A practical option if proximity to the nightlife is your priority.
• Spicers Balfour Brisbane – Small upscale hotel in neighbouring New Farm with a quieter residential setting. Pick this if you want to be close to the party but prefer somewhere calmer when the night is over.

For this event, Fortitude Valley is the obvious base. Staying locally means you can enjoy the full long weekend without spending much of it travelling between your hotel and the nightlife.

GAY OUT Tips

• Arrive early if you have an early-entry ticket – those tickets require entry before 3 pm.
• The main event runs for seven hours, so don’t feel you need a separate afternoon bar crawl.
• Wear something comfortable enough for a long daytime-to-evening party.
• Book the official after-party separately if you plan to continue beyond 9 pm.
• Staying in Fortitude Valley makes the weekend considerably easier, particularly if you’re attending both the main event and after-party.
• Monday is a public holiday in Queensland, giving interstate visitors an extra recovery day before heading home.
